Behind the Books - Lisa Hanley (Author of 'Chefs of the Margaret River Region')

In an age of celebrity chefs, reality cooking shows, and foodie bloggers, modern cuisine seems to be undoubtedly on the ‘what’s hot’ list. Lisa Hanley must therefore be hot property, as she is a devoted food lover and chef, and co-wrote our ‘Chefs of the Margaret River Region’ book.

Since working on the book, Lisa has moved to Sydney, where she runs ‘Hands on Training’, a business which takes her onsite to hospitality venues, to train their staff. I asked Lisa a few questions about her life post-Margaret River.

Fill us in on your new business?

'Hands On Training' is my new business with a motto of "Building a valuable workplace".

It is where I go into hospitality businesses themselves and conduct half or full day courses for the staff covering topics such as basic training, communication, dealing with conflict and sociability.

Can you share any food tips in and around your new hood?

I live in Avalon on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, a little paradise about 50 min drive from the city filled with great cafes and restaurants so I don't even need to go into the big smoke. My favourites are The Boat House at Palm beach (this is the iconic waterfront restaurant featured in Home & Away), Harvest in Newport and Starfish in Avalon.

What food experiences do you miss in Margaret River?

Ahhhhhh….The smell of the vines, even the sound of them when a light wind is blowing.

The produce, especially marron and especially if someone drops in with a freshly caught dozen! … Sitting on the decks in summer and in front of the fireplaces in winter.

What’s been cooking lately?

Lately I have been cooking a lot of dippy eggs with soldiers from our chickens, it is the morning ritual, and for dinner its always good to grab some meat or seafood and head down to the beach BBQs with a nice bottle of Margaret River wine to enjoy the sunsets.

Although I do have to add that I am very lucky to have a husband who is a fantastic and passionate cook and usually wants to get in the kitchen most nights, and trust me when you've been a chef most of your life, you have to love that!!!
